Another bail delay for Palm Beach eye doctor charged with Medicare fraud
After spending two months behind bars on charges that he bilked Medicare out of $109 million, Dr. Salomon Melgen could be released from jail by the end of the week.
U.S. Magistrate James Hopkins on Monday was poised to finally set bond, allowing the 61-year-old Palm Beach County ophthalmologist to be released from a federal detention center in Miami while awaiting trial. A bail bondsman agreed to accept a villa and other land the doctor owns in his Dominican Republic homeland as collateral for a $2 million bond and property he owns here to back a separate $1 million bond.
