Suspect arrested in hit-and-run that killed 2 kids and injured 4 in Wilton Manors
The driver suspected of plowing his car into six children, killing two, before driving away in Wilton Manors has been arrested, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said late Tuesday.
Sean Charles Greer, 27, of Wilton Manors, was taken into custody and confessed, police said.
Greer is being charged with two counts of leaving the scene of an accident involving a death, as well as a slew of other felonies. He was also driving with a suspended license and had been on probation for burglary, BSO said.
His arrest came a little more than a day after the car crash horrified South Florida and sparked a massive investigation to find the driver of the 2009 Honda Accord sedan that struck the children on Northwest Ninth Avenue. Police say the Honda was driving south when a Broward County Transit bus pulled away from a stop and tried to merge into the road.
The Honda driver passed the bus on the left, then sliced in front of it, almost hitting the driver’s side of the bus. But after the hard cut to the right, the Honda driver lost control, swung to his right, onto the sidewalk and driveway of the apartment building at 2417 NW Ninth Ave. — subsequently hitting the six children.
“After the crash occurred, the vehicle accelerated and fled the area southbound,” BSO says.
Broward Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday morning released the names of six children struck Monday afternoon by a hit-and-run driver in Wilton Manors.
Andrea Fleming, 6, and Kylie Jones, 5, died where they were hit in the 2400 block of Northwest Ninth Avenue. Boys Johnathan Carter, 10, and Audre Fleming Jr., 2, and girls Draya Fleming and Laziyah Stokes, both 9, were taken to Broward Health Medical Center, police said.
The 2009 Honda Accord used in the hit-and-run was later found in Wilton Manors, and “had damage consistent with being involved in this crash. The front bumper was also missing from the vehicle, which was located at the scene of the crash,” BSO said in a news release.
Stanley Holcomb Sr., Andrea Fleming’s uncle, had earlier delivered a public message to the driver who killed his niece: “Have a heart and turn yourself in,” he told the Miami Herald Tuesday afternoon.
Andrea Fleming was a smart first-grader and she was always smiling, Holcomb Sr. said.
“She kept us smiling and kept my heart going. It’s too bad I couldn’t be there to save her,” Holcomb added.
One of Andrea Fleming’s older sisters, Draya Fleming, and her younger brother, Audre Fleming Jr., were hurt in the hit-and-run. All three were visiting their dad, Audre Fleming Sr., Holcomb Sr. said.
They “are doing all right,” but they are in a lot of pain, he added.
As for Greer, he is no stranger to the law.
Greer was on probation for burglarizing a home in Oakland Park in September 2018, stealing a PlayStation 4, among other items. Greer pawned the video-game console and an eyewitness identified him as being at the crime scene, court records show.
He was sentenced to three years of drug-offender probation.
Over the past decade, he has also been arrested on allegations of trespassing at a Walmart in North Lauderdale, petty theft at a shopping plaza in Coral Springs, marijuana possession and driving without a valid license and resisting arrest. And he’s had a slew of traffic infractions, court records show.
In civil court, a woman in 2017 filed for a domestic violence restraining order against Greer, accusing him of destroying furniture and damaging her home after she broke up with him. “He has anger issues. This is an unsafe environment for my kids and myself!” the woman wrote in her petition. “I’ve tried to break up with him multiple times, he won’t leave!”
The petition was later dismissed after the woman did not show up to a scheduled hearing.
In September, a Broward administrative judge ordered Greer to pay over $6,400 in back child support, plus over $200 a month for his 7-year-old daughter.
