Deerfield Beach High student shot, killed after attending grandfather’s funeral, reports say

Shortly after a funeral concluded Saturday afternoon, shots rang out outside a Riviera Beach church, killing two people dead and injuring two others.

Just after 2:30 p.m., a woman, man, 15-year-old and another juvenile were shot across from Victory City Church, 163 W 20th St. in the Palm Beach County municipality, Riviera Beach police said. The 15-year-old and man were killed. Police have not released their identities.

The woman was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach and the other child is being treated at a nearby hospital, police said.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel reported that Deerfield Beach High School football player Terrance Jackson was the 15-year-old killed in the shooting. He was attending his grandfather’s funeral.

“We’re on college tours. I’m in Auburn with 20 kids. He stayed to go to the funeral,” Deerfield coach Jevon Glenn said to the Sentinel.

Jackson was a sophomore who played defensive end. He decided not to go on the team trip to several colleges so he could attend the funeral.

ShotSpotter, a gunfire detection system, counted 13 shots, police said. No arrests have been made and police are investigating.

Pastor Tywuante D. Lupoe for Victor City Church said in a video posted on Facebook that the church knew there could be an altercation at the funeral so they had armed security and a Riviera Beach police officer there. The tension stemmed from a family dispute.

In a separate Facebook post, the church said none of its members were involved in the shooting.

“We solicit the prayers of the saints today as we mourn the lost of two young black men to a senseless shooting after a funeral held here at the church,” the church posted.
