Scammers rob elderly women of $35,000. One person arrested, police looking for others.
Two elderly women got a call they weren’t expecting on Monday. A person on the phone told them one of their relatives had been arrested, police said.
It was all a scam, but they didn’t realize that.
The women, aged 72 and 74, were told that their relative had caused a traffic crash with serious injuries, Miami-Dade police said. The caller told them an attorney was going to help them stop their relative from going to jail. This scam was layered.
A person claiming to be the attorney then told the women to go to their bank and withdraw a certain amount of cash to be turned over to a security courier who would visit them at their home, police said.
The women did as they were told. When they had the money, Aquiles Brito-Bigott, a 37-year-old Miami man, went to their homes posing as the security courier and took their money, police said.
The women were defrauded out of $35,000, police said. Officers did not release the women’s names.
Brito-Bigott was charged with organized scheme to defraud, grand theft and theft from the elderly.
Police are asking for help finding the scammers that worked with Brito-Bigott and anyone else who was defrauded by them.
