A young mother was arrested last weekend after videotaping herself violently shaking her baby and tying a cord around the child’s neck, police said this week. The woman sent the video to a family member, who forwarded it to law enforcement.

Opa-locka police chief James Dobson said the infant is now with the paternal grandmother. The child’s mother was arrested and charged with child abuse with no great bodily harm and battery.

“The baby is OK,” Dobson said.

According to Susana Hernandez’s arrest warrant, a family member who notified police showed the officer the videotape of Hernandez, 18, striking the infant on the upper side of the thigh and stomach and shaking the child. Police said a second video was similar and showed Hernandez shaking the child’s bed up and down and the baby screaming.

A third video, according to police, showed the woman holding a cord “around the baby’s neck with the defendant pulling on it.”

Opa-locka police said the woman admitted to doing the things shown on the video and said she told them she committed the acts because she was upset the child’s father wasn’t returning her phone calls.

Dobson said the city notified the Department of Children and Families.
