He wanted to spread some Christmas cheer. So he decided to hand out marijuana, cops say

There are many different ways to spread Christmas cheer. Some carol and adorn their homes with lights. Others like to blast Christmas music like it’s going out of style.

One Pinellas County man decided to take a different approach.

Richard Spurrier, 67, was arrested Saturday on drug possession charges after police say he was handing out marijuana “because it was Christmas.”

The arrest report alleges that Spurrier was spotted giving away cannabis to anyone who walked by him near downtown St. Petersburg late Sunday evening .

Upon searching him, officers found 45 grams of the marijuana, a glass pipe and a digital scale in his backpack, the report says. He also had a cane with a hidden sword.

The St. Petersburg resident was taken to a Pinellas County jail. Records show he was released on his own recognizance Sunday afternoon.

Court documents revealed Spurrier was found guilty of several misdemeanors and municipal ordinance violations, including trespassing and possession of an open container.
