Gun stolen from law enforcement officer after he fell asleep on beach, cops say
A New York law enforcement officer vacationing on South Beach had a gun stolen from his backpack after he fell asleep on the sand, police said.
According to an incident report provided by Miami Beach police, the officer and a woman fell asleep while they were lying on the beach Tuesday night with a backpack full of valuables next to them. When they woke up, the backpack was gone.
Inside the backpack: miscellaneous police equipment, a police badge, a cellphone and credit cards.
Miami Beach police found the backpack near the boardwalk after a brief search.
A cellphone was recovered, but the weapon, a black fully loaded Glock and several credit cards were missing.
An earlier version of this story incorrectly identified the man whose backpack was stolen. He is not a New York state trooper; he is a law enforcement officer.
