A South Miami Middle School student who had just gotten into a fight was arrested Thursday on charges of carrying a weapon on campus, according to sources with knowledge of the incident.
Miami-Dade Public Media Relations Director Jackie Calzadilla said the student was arrested after a gun was found in his bookbag. The circumstances surrounding the incident weren’t immediately made public by police.
According to sources familiar with the incident, two 14-year-old students got into a fight on the South Miami campus Thursday afternoon. Before heading to the principal’s office, the student with the gun in his bag tried to flee. He was caught by school administrators and the gun was discovered when he was being questioned in the principal’s office.
Administrators became aware of the weapon when another student not involved in the fight told school personnel, Calzadilla said. She said the student who was carrying the gun never threatened to use it at any point during the confrontation.
