Fight over parking leads to shooting at Tropical Park, police say

A woman was shot Wednesday night after what police say was a fight over parking in popular Tropical Park in Southwest Miami-Dade.

The shooting happened just after 8:30 p.m. at the park, 7900 SW 40th St.

Police say a couple in a black Mercedes “practiced parking” in the park’s lot when they were approached by a couple in a Nissan SUV about the Mercedes blocking the handicapped parking spaces.

An argument and confrontation followed between the passenger of the Mercedes and the driver of the SUV.

“The passenger of the Mercedes proceeded to exit his vehicle, as the argument continued,” Miami-Dade police Detective Robin Pinkard said in a statement. “At some point thereafter, the passenger of the Mercedes-Benz, who was still standing outside of his vehicle, retrieved a firearm from his belt bag and fired several shots toward the Nissan.”

Police on Thursday identified the people in the Mercedes as driver Lina Bahamon and passenger Michael Levy, 48.

The couple in the Nissan SUV were identified as driver Rudy Velasquez and passenger Cecilia Gonzalez.

Gonzalez, 63, who was shot in the arm, was taken to Kendall Regional Medical Center, 11750 Bird Rd., in stable condition.

Police say everyone is being questioned and “arrests are pending.”
