A mare was found dead in a private ranch in Northwest Miami-Dade Wednesday and an animal abuse investigator says she was slaughtered for her meat.
Richard Couto, who investigates illegal horse slaughter, said the family who owns the horse went to feed the 8-year-old mixed breed Wednesday when they found her "butchered."
"The family was distraught," he said, adding the family’s two young children saw the dead horse. “It looks like she was butchered alive.
Couto said someone entered the private barn at 18250 NW 137 Ave. between Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon. The ranch is located in the C-9 Basin, an area of northwest Miami-Dade County known for illegal activity, including horse slaughter.
