A North Miami Beach police officer, who was traveling westbound on Northeast 163rd Street and Northeast 19th Avenue early Sunday morning, was hit by a red vehicle making a left turn onto 19th Avenue, leaving her unconscious, police said.
The accident happened around 1 a.m. Sunday. The officer, Nicole Mood, who was hired by the department on July 26, 2013, had to be extracted from her police car. She was rushed to Aventura Hospital’s trauma center, where she remains in critical condition, police said. She is part of the North Miami Beach Special Response Team.
There were two people in the red car. The driver of the car, whom police did not identify, attempted to flee on foot. Police arrested the driver; the driver and passenger are in stable condition at Aventura Hospital. Police are investigating whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
While officers were at the accident scene, a second accident occurred involving another North Miami Beach police car. The marked police car was at the scene with police lights activated when a large SUV failed to stop and struck the police car. No injuries were reported from that crash. One passenger in the SUV was arrested for a bench warrant, police said.
