Police have shed new light on what caused a two-car collision in North Miami Beach that left a Tesla in flames and one person dead Wednesday afternoon.

The Tesla and an SUV were driving westbound on Northwest 163rd Street, between 29th and 34th avenues, around 4 p.m. when the SUV driver cut off the electric car, causing it to crash into a utility pole, said Detective Corey Darden, a North Miami Beach police spokesman.

The Tesla went up in flames after the crash and trapped the driver, who was the only person inside. Officers could not pry the Tesla driver out of the car before it became fully engulfed in flames, Darden said.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue also confirmed paramedics took another person to the hospital. Details on the person’s injury and their involvement in the crash weren’t immediately clear.

Darden said police are working with the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office to confirm the Tesla driver’s identity. The SUV driver also had not been identified as of Thursday afternoon.
