Teenage boy stabbed by fellow student at North Miami Beach High School, officials say
A teenage boy was flown to the hospital after being stabbed while fighting with another student Thursday afternoon at North Miami Beach High School, police said.
The incident, which school officials are calling an “isolated altercation,” happened around 12:52 p.m. at North Miami Beach High, located at 1247 Northeast 167th St.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue airlifted the pediatric patient to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, said Andrea Rudchenco, a department spokeswoman.
During the fight, the student was stabbed with an unknown object that police still have not found, said Miami-Dade County Police Deputy Chief Carlos Fernandez.
“We don’t know exactly what that sharp object is,” Fernandez told media during a press conference at the school Thursday afternoon. “It has not been recovered.”
The victim, who has not been named, is in stable condition, Fernandez said.
The other student ran away from campus after the fight, Fernandez said, and police have not apprehended him. Police will continue searching, but Fernandez asserted they hope he will turn himself in.
The fight happened at the rear of the school near the athletic field bleachers. Fernandez said initial information police received indicates the boys agreed to meet there to fight.
Fernandez confirmed both boys are students at the school, but he did not know their ages or grades.
Students left school in a “controlled dismissal” Thursday afternoon, Miami-Dade County Public Schools spokeswoman Gabrielle Acosta said, adding classes were expected to resume Friday.
