Here’s how long there will be a boil-water notice for part of Miami-Dade after pipe break
The rupture of a 12-inch water pipe on Tuesday morning has put part of North Miami-Dade under a precautionary boil-water notice until at least Thursday morning, the city of North Miami Beach announced.
The area under notice spans Northwest Seventh Avenue (U.S. 441) from 146th Street up to just south of 155th Street. The city said Biscayne Gardens area buildings east and west of Interstate 95 might have low pressure during repair work on the break.
Those affected should bring their water to a rolling boil for a minute before cooking, drinking or brushing teeth.
A private contractor was installing an 8-inch sewer line on Northwest Seventh Avenue for Miami-Dade Water & Sewer, the agency said via email. Water & Sewer says the contractor didn’t hit a properly noted North Miami Beach water line Monday, but saw water escaping the steel plates over the construction Tuesday.
“The contractor has taken mitigating factors to prevent this from happening, unfortunately the impacted water pipe is an old concrete pipe, and very brittle,” Water & Sewer’s email said. “The ground geology of the region is sugar sand, which also is problematic as it relates to backfilling under the pipe. Vibrations from the ongoing excavation of the construction project and/or that of the roadway’s traffic most likely contributed to the leaking of the pipe.”
Those with questions can call the city of North Miami Beach 305-662-9283.
