No-swimming alert issued for Oleta River Park and nearby waters after pipe’s ‘discharge’
An 18-inch wastewater pipe burst Tuesday, causing an “unpermitted discharge” of sewage into neighboring waters in parts of North Miami-Dade.
What this means is no swimming, fishing or boating in Oleta River State Park and nearby waters until the waters test clean.
According to the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department, crews have contained the spillage after the pipe broke Tuesday afternoon.
The wastewater emptied in the area of 7000 Island Boulevard into Little Maule Lake and adjacent water bodies.
The department issued an alert and put up no-swim signs and no recreational activities like fishing or boating in the affected areas. The boundaries are Northeast 183rd Street to the north, Oleta River State Park Beach to the south, Biscayne Boulevard to the west and the Intracoastal Waterway to the east.
Parts of Greynolds Park are within those boundaries.
The Department of Health in Miami-Dade and the Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources will continue to test the area’s waterway. “The advisory remains in effect until two consecutive days of clear testing occur after repairs are completed.”
