Miami Gardens woman turns herself in months after shooting woman, cops say
Anne Tejada was blindsided by a hail of gunfire outside a home in Miami Gardens, waking up hours later in a hospital bed, police say. For nearly five months the shooter hadn’t been caught — until she walked herself into jail Tuesday.
Milagros Delacardid Navarro, 35, is facing charges of aggravated battery with great bodily harm and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. She remained in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as of Thursday, records show.
On Feb. 22, Tyajah Thomas and her mother-in-law, Tejada, were in her car when Thomas suddenly heard gunshots near the 130 block of Northwest 202nd Terrace in Miami Gardens. She realized Tejada had been hit, an arrest report read.
Rushing to Aventura Hospital, Tejada was intubated and treated for her wounds. Aventura police officers spoke with the pair about what occurred, but Thomas is from Georgia and didn’t know the area or the person who shot at them, the report read.
Tejada remembered leaving Hollywood Beach earlier in the day before returning home to shower and cook, she struggled to tell officers as she had recently been extubated. They visited a friend’s home and she recalled leaving.
However, “Her next memory is waking up [later that day] in the hospital,” police wrote.
A week later, officers were able to pin down the owner of a nearby home and talked to neighbors where the shooting occurred, which led them to the suspect.
A woman, only called Yanella in the report, had left Navarro in charge of her home for the past two months as she was in Ocala. She came back sometime after the shooting because Navarro told her in a phone call that something had happened in the parking lot and Yanella needed to return.
A neighbor shared video with officers that showed Navarro shooting in Tejada’s direction, the report read.
On April 15, nearly two months after the shooting, a witness came into the Miami Gardens Police Station to report that she saw Navarro pull a handgun from a black fanny pack that day. While she didn’t see her shoot, she did notice Navarro point the gun at Thomas’ car with Tejada inside as they drove off.
Authorities did not say what prompted Navarro to shoot at the women.
On Tuesday, Navarro walked into the Miami Gardens Police Station and turned herself in.
