A driver was jailed in Miami Gardens after an attempt to avoid traffic ended in an 11-year-old being struck by the car and hospitalized, according to police.

Shortly before 8 a.m. on Tuesday, a driver in a black Ford Fusion was speeding while going southbound on Northwest 12th Avenue near 188th Street, police say. The driver, 23-year-old Darius Forbes, then drove onto the swale to avoid slow traffic and collided with a tree and then the child, Miami Gardens spokeswoman Diana Delgado wrote in an email to the Miami Herald.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue airlifted the child to Ryder Trauma Center with a serious head injury, said Delgado, who added that the child is in stable condition.

Forbes was arrested on a charge of reckless driving.
