A driver was jailed in Miami Gardens after an attempt to avoid traffic ended in an 11-year-old being struck by the car and hospitalized, according to police.

Shortly before 8 a.m. on Tuesday, a driver in a black Ford Fusion was speeding while going southbound on Northwest 12th Avenue near 188th Street, police say. The driver then drove onto the swale to avoid slow traffic and collided with a tree and then the child, Miami Gardens spokeswoman Diana Delgado wrote in an email to the Miami Herald.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue airlifted the child to Ryder Trauma Center with a serious head injury, said Delgado, who added that the child is in stable condition.

The driver, whom police did not publicly identify, was arrested on a charge of reckless driving.
