Speed, alcohol led to crash that killed 5 people, 4 of them kids, Miami Gardens cops say
A driver could face vehicular homicide charges after five people, four of whom were children, died in a multi-car crash Saturday evening, Miami Gardens police said.
Miami Gardens police identified the driver as 25-year-old Antonio Wilcox, Jr. As of Monday evening, Wilcox had not been arrested.
The five people killed haven’t been identified yet.
“Speed was a factor and alcohol was also a factor,” Miami Gardens police Sgt. Emmanuel Jeanty told media at the crash site Saturday night.
Herald news partner CBS Miami reports that Miami Gardens police said a driver in a black KIA SUV, heading south on Northwest 37th Avenue near 170th Street, rear-ended a white Nissan Altima with the woman and five children, crunching the smaller car into a Cadillac Escalade.
After the 5:50 p.m. crash, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said, they needed to extricate three people who were entrapped. Four children and the woman were driven to Hollywood’s Memorial Regional trauma center and one child was airlifted there.
Four other people were driven to a hospital in Broward.
Correction: An earlier version of this story misstated Wilcox Jr.’s status in this case.
