A Miami Gardens officer and two others were taken to the hospital — one in critical condition — after police say a driver ran a red light and crashed into a patrol car early Tuesday morning.

The crash happened around 3 a.m. near Northwest 27th Avenue and Northwest 167th Street, close to the Palmetto Expressway (State Road 826).

Three people, including the officer, were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, reported CBS News Miami, Miami Herald’s news partner. The officer is expected to be OK but another person was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition.

The officer was heading south on Northwest 27th Avenue when a driver going in the opposite direction ran a red light and crashed into the police vehicle at the intersection of 167th Street, Miami Gardens officer Diana Delgado told reporters at the scene.

CBS News Miami footage showed a Miami Gardens police SUV with extensive front-end damage. Another mangled vehicle was seen with its airbags deployed.

Palmetto’s off-ramps at 27th Avenue and several 27th Avenue lanes were initially shut down but have since been reopened.
