Three people were sent to the hospital after a gunman shot up an Opa-locka apartment complex with an AK-47, according to reports.

Who shot up an Opa-locka apartment and why remained a mystery to the city’s police department Sunday night, nearly 24 hours after a flurry of bullets from an AK-47 assault rifle left three people wounded.

“I wish I had something new for your, but I don’t,” Opa-locka Police Chief James Dobson told the Miami Herald. “We’ve interviewed the three victims, but nobody seems to have any idea of who did this or why.”

The gunfire broke out at 13436 Aswan Ave. about 9:30 Saturday night. It continued long enough for Opa-locka police officers to reach the scene and briefly come under fire themselves, Dobson said. But the gunman, when he realized he was shooting at cops, broke off and fled, along with two accomplices.

The police didn’t recover the gunman’s rifle. “But we’re sure it was an AK-47,” Dobson said. “We have the spent cartridges.”

Detectives canvassed the neighborhood Saturday night and continued all day Sunday without learning anything that would lead them to a possible suspect, Dobson said.

Officials are asking that anyone with information call Opa-locka police or Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
