A father holding his 1-year-old child outside a Miami Gardens home was shot multiple times Monday night, police said.

The baby was shot once and was in stable condition at Jackson Memorial’s Ryder Trauma Center late Monday evening. The father was in critical condition.

“As far as we know, the father was holding the child in his arms,’’ said Carlos Austin, a spokesman for Miami Gardens police.

The drive-by shooting happened around 9 p.m. in the 18700 block of Northwest 23rd Avenue, not too far from Crestview Elementary School, 2201 NW 187th St.

Austin said police were looking for a dark-colored Honda with dark-tinted windows. Police didn’t know whether the shooters shot from the car or exited the vehicle and shot the father and his child.

“It was like a barrage of ‘brrrrrr, pop, pop, pop,’” neighbor Maxine Solie told WSVN Channel 7. “I said to the person I was talking to, ‘Them fools must maybe think that it’s still the Fourth of July.’”

On Monday night, helicopters circled the scene while police searched the neighborhood. Police said they were looking for a third person, who could have been a third victim or possibly the shooter.

“We don’t know at this time if it’s a victim or a suspect,” Austin said.

Anyone with information is asked to called Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS (8477).
