Miami Beach police to hold DUI checkpoint as Labor Day weekend starts
As Labor Day weekend gets started, Miami Beach police will hold a DUI checkpoint Friday night that will affect outbound traffic.
Starting at 8 p.m. Friday, cops will be set up in westbound lanes at Fifth Street and Michigan Avenue. The checkpoint will continue until 3:30 a.m. Saturday.
Police will also conduct “saturation patrols” where officers trained to detect drug-impaired drivers will be on the lookout.
The checkpoint is part of a national campaign by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration called “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.” According to the administration’s website, more than 750 people died in drunk-driving crashes during Labor Day holidays from 2010 to 2014.
