The boaters who landed on Fisher Island on Friday morning were trying to smuggle a group of people into the U.S., according to the Border Patrol.

Miami-Dade police along with Customs and Border Protection arrested 18 adult male Haitian citizens who were on the boat.

“We believe this event was an organized smuggling event [for profit] and that the group transited through the Bahamas en route to the Miami,” said Todd Bryant, Miami Sector Division Chief for the Border Patrol in an e-mail to The Herald.

The Haitians will be deported
