Have you seen this boat? FWC needs help finding Miami Beach hit-and-run vessel

Florida law enforcement officers are searching for a boat that struck a father and son who were out on a dinghy in Biscayne Bay on Wednesday night. The agency also is asking for the public’s help in finding it.

The boat is described as a 40- to 43-foot Formula Boat, possibly a Crossover (Allsport and Supersport models), with quad Mercury L6 Verados, and two-tone cowling paint, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the agency investigating the deadly crash. The vessel also was described as having colored sides, a white hull and black bottom paint.

The boat was last seen heading north in the Meloy Channel, from the 79th Street Causeway to the Broad Causeway, between 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Davide Veglia, 55, of North Miami died after the collision, according to the FWC His 14-year-old son was injured.

FWC officers say Veglia and his son were aboard a seven-foot inflatable dinghy in the Meloy Channel, near Indian Creek and Biscayne Pointe when they were struck by the boat and ejected into the water. The boat didn’t stop after the impact.

The agency is requesting anyone who witnessed the accident or anyone who may have video footage or information to call the Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922).
