Two people riding on an electric bicycle across the Julia Tuttle Causeway early Tuesday morning were hit by a car—leaving one dead and the other in critical condition, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

At around 3:05 a.m. Tuesday, a white Ford sedan collided into the electric bike as it was heading east into Miami Beach, near the Alton Road exit.

Both bike riders were taken to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital —where one person died and the other remains in critical condition.

The crash shut down the eastbound lanes of I-195 near Alton Road for hours, causing heavy traffic. The lanes opened up around 7:40 a.m., according to Miami Beach Police.

Authorities have not released the names of the cyclists or the driver.
