Electric scooter driver dead after car crash at Miami Beach intersection
An electric scooter driver is dead after crashing into a car at a Miami Beach intersection Wednesday morning, according to city police.
Officers responded to the collision at 11th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue — a short walk from the Miami Beach Police Department — around 10 a.m, according to a statement from the department. Helicopter footage from NBC 6 captured yellow crime scene tape roping off a Mercedes near a pool of blood and what appeared to be the scooter caught under the front of the car, the TV news station reported.
Moments before the collision, the scooter was riding southbound on Pennsylvania Avenue when witnesses say it ran a red light and barreled into the car, which was headed east on 11th, said Miami Beach police spokesman Christopher Bess. The victim, who officials confirmed is a man, was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where he died. His identity has yet to be released while detectives locate his family members.
Bess confirmed that no arrests have been made and that the Mercedes’ driver “remained on scene and is cooperating with investigators” as the police department’s Traffic Homicide Unit continues looking into the crash. He’s urging “micromobility” motorists to practice safe driving habits, considering how popular the mode of transport has become in recent years.
“It’s a very sad sequence of events,” said Bess. “[Miami Beach Police] launched a micromobility awareness campaign. ... We are prioritizing education, and this [incident] is a harsh example of why.”
