Woman found dead inside dumpster in South Beach. Her son is in custody, cops say
A man is in custody after police found a woman dead inside a dumpster at a South Beach apartment complex, law enforcement officials say.
At around 9:20 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to 800 Washington Avenue, where they were called for a welfare check, per police. Investigators told Miami Herald news partner CBS News Miami that the man killed his mother and threw her body down the trash chute.
Officers on the scene found a trail of blood from the apartment to the trash chute, reports say. The woman had traveled from New Jersey to visit her son.
Police haven’t identified the woman or her son as of Sunday, although the man has a history of mental health issues, authorities added.
The area behind the apartment complex had a large police presence early Sunday. Per Local 10 News, a forklift loaded a dumpster — covered by a yellow sheet — onto the back of a tow truck. TV cameras also captured evidence markers near clothing on the sidewalk.
