A huge cycling race takes over Miami Beach Saturday. Here’s what that means for traffic

Plan ahead if you live on Miami Beach or are planning to visit the beach Saturday. A large pro cycling event is expected to close about five blocks to vehicle traffic in the afternoon, according to event organizers.

The National Cycling League’s Miami Beach Invitational is set to start with a “FanFest” at Lummus Park between 10th and 11th streets at noon.

There are a number of events throughout the day, mostly on Ocean Drive, but drivers be aware, the race course for the Pro Women’s and Men’s races beginning at 4:15 p.m. is between 8th and 13th streets north and south, and four blocks west to east between Washington Avenue and Ocean Drive.

When will traffic be impacted?

Road closures will begin at 5 a.m. and are expected to last until the event is over at 8 p.m., the city said in a statement.

  • Northbound lanes of Washington Avenue are scheduled to be closed from 5 a.m. until 8 p.m.
  • Southbound lanes of Washington Avenue between 15th and 7th streets will be delineated to allow two-way traffic from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., the city said.
  • 8th Street will be closed throughout the day from Washington Avenue to Ocean Drive.
  • Southbound Ocean Drive will be closed from 13th to 8th streets.
  • Collins Avenue will be closed from 5th to 14th streets
  • 13th Street will be closed from Washington Avenue to Ocean Drive.

  • BMX Freestyle Stunt Show: 12 p.m., Ocean Drive between 11th and 12th streets
  • Kids Race: 1 p.m., Ocean Drive between 9th and 11th streets
  • BMX Freestyle Stunt Show: 1:30 p.m., Ocean Drive between 11th and 12th streets
  • Roll Like a Pro Community Bike Ride: 2:30 p.m., 11th Street and Ocean Drive
  • Race Kick-Off: 3:45 p.m., at the race’s start and finish line, located at 11th Street and Ocean Drive
  • Pro Women’s Race: 4:15 p.m. at the course’s start and finish lines, located at 11th Street and Ocean Drive
  • Pro Men’s Race: 5:45 p.m. at the course’s start and finish lines, located at 11th Street and Ocean Drive
