ABC anchor takes his show to Miami — and reveals he has a sweet tooth
Welcome to Miami, bienvenido a Miami, David Muir.
The “ABC World News Tonight” anchor took his show down south Thursday. We were told he had lunch at Sparrow Italia in Wynwood to meet the ABC Miami/WSVN folks, and paid a visit to Little Havana for a sweet treat.
In the spotlight was Azucar, for the program’s “Made in America” segment, focusing on small (and thriving) U.S. businesses.
Muir met with the owner Suzy Batlle, who opened the gourmet ice cream shop 14 years ago after getting laid off from her banking job (her kids were apparently not unhappy with this venture).
Azucar, which means “sugar,” now employs more than two dozen workers in two different shops (the other is in Pinecrest) as well as in their nearby factory.
All the flavors are made with fresh, local ingredients and inspired by Batlle’s Cuban family, who also used to whip up ice cream from scratch. The most popular item on the menu is likely the Abuela Maria, in a nod to her own grandmother, Isabel. The salty sweet vanilla concoction includes guava marmalade and crushed Maria Goya crackers.
“Wow,” is all Muir could muster after a taste.
The journalist then went on to try the cafe con leche (which prompted a chef’s kiss) and the Willy Cherrino, inspired by famed Cuban crooner Willy Chirino.
“It’s bourbon with two different types of cherries,” explained Batlle, who has 160 different recipes, many of which came about thanks to suggestions from friends and neighbors.
“Amazing,” said Muir, his mouth still full.
We’re thinking Azucar may get an uptick in sales, like, immediately. Muir reminded viewers that if you’re not in South Florida to get the ice cream in person, their yummy frozen product can be shipped all across the country.
On Instagram, the store thanked the team at “ABC World News Tonight” for the shoutout.
“Such an incredible honor to be spotlighted,” read the caption, along with the clip. “Thanks to everyone who tuned in and for all the support you guys have shown us!”
The gang also posed with Muir in another snap calling the experience and national recognition an “honor.”
