Woman crossing the street in Little Havana struck and killed, Miami police say
A woman crossing the street in Little Havana was struck and killed Monday, Miami police said.
At 11:22 a.m., police were called to the corner of Southwest Seventh Street and Fifth Avenue to investigate a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian, Officer Kiara Delva, a spokeswoman with Miami police, said in an email.
When officers arrived, they found a woman in dark clothes lying in the left lane of Southwest Seventh Street, a few feet from the intersection. A blue plastic bag, similar to those from nearby Presidente Supermarket, was on the pavement, close to her right hand.
The woman was in her 70s, Delva said.
The woman was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition, but she died from her injuries, Delva said. Investigators at the scene questioned the 80-year-old driver, and a blue Dodge minivan was stopped nearby.
The woman was crossing Southwest Seventh Street from south to north when she was struck on the roadway by the driver of the minivan who had made a left turn from Southwest Fifth Avenue to Southwest Seventh Street, Delva said Tuesday.
The driver was not at fault, Officer Michael Vega, a police spokesman, said Tuesday.
Police did not immediately disclose the names of the pedestrian or the driver.
There is no marked crosswalk at Southwest Seventh Street, a one-way, three-lane road, and the nearest one is about 500 feet away at Southwest Fourth Avenue.
The intersection connects a residential area to a commercial one where there’s a pharmacy, a Presidente Supermarket, a barbershop, a liquor store and several restaurants.
