Police say chase through Miami and Key Biscayne ended with rifle drop-off, highway drama
Police arrested a man Friday morning who led them on a chase from Key Biscayne to a State Road 836 on-ramp, hitting a patrol car and a passenger car along the way, according to law enforcement.
The chaotic pursuit came after a confrontation outside a business at 180 Crandon Blvd. in Key Biscayne, said Officer Michael Vega, a Miami police spokesman.
The man, who has not been named, pulled out a case containing a rifle and demanded that a man inside the business come outside, Vega said.
The man heard sirens approaching and left the case on the ground, driving off in a BMW SUV, Vega said.
A Miami-Dade police dispatcher requested help from Miami police around 11:40 a.m. as the car drove along U.S. 1, Vega said.
Police lost sight of the BMW, but spotted it again at 11:50 a.m. traveling near 641 NW 12th Ave., Vega said.
As the chase continued, the SUV rear-ended a car on Northwest 17th Avenue and 7th Street and drove off.
On the 17th Avenue on-ramp to State Road 836, the BMW crashed several times into the guardrail, Vega said. The driver abandoned his car and ran away.
Miami police officers found him on 17th Avenue right off of 836 and arrested him.
