Suspect arrested after parking lot hit-and-run that turned into shooting in Kendall
A hit-and-run crash in a Kendall condo parking lot nearly turned deadly when the owner of the car shot the man who damaged his vehicle Friday morning, Miami-Dade County police said.
Lazaro Hernandez, 36, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon as he recovered from a gunshot to the face at Jackson South Medical Center, police announced Friday night.
Around 5:40 a.m., Hernandez drove his truck into Christian Hernandez Calvo’s parked car in the Village at Dadeland, a condo complex at 7344 SW 82nd St., according to police. Hernandez quickly sped away.
Police said as Hernandez Calvo, 46, was assessing the damage, the driver returned and “intentionally drove” his car toward him.
Hernandez Calvo told police he thought he was going to be run over, so he pulled a gun out and opened fire, striking the driver in the face, said Detective Angel Rodriguez, a police spokesman.
Hernandez, the driver, sped off again but was found a short time later at Southwest 72nd Street and 73rd Avenue, just east of the Palmetto Expressway exit at Sunset Drive, Rodriguez said.
Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue paramedics transported him to Jackson South Medical Center in stable condition, Rodriguez said.
Magnolia Hernández, 40, who lives in the complex, told the Miami Herald that a gunshot woke her up around 5:30 a.m. When she ran downstairs and opened her door, she said she recognized the car of her former partner, Lazaro Hernandez, and saw him drive away. He is the father of their children, she said, adding they had lived together for 18 years.
She is still listed on his emergency contacts on his phone, and hospital staff called her to say he was there being treated for a gunshot wound, Hernández said.
