Two dead after car fleeing from officers crashes into tree in West Kendall, police say
What started with police trying to pull over a speeding Honda Accord ended with two people dead after the car crashed into a tree, according to Miami-Dade police.
The incident happened just before noon Thursday and shut down a stretch of Kendall Drive between Southwest 167th Avenue and Krome Avenue.
Police say patrol units observed the gray sedan “traveling at a high rate of speed” in the area of Southwest 177th Avenue and Southwest 136th Street. The officers got into their vehicles, put on their lights and sirens and attempted to pull over the car, police said.
Instead, the driver made a right turn at the intersection of Southwest 177th Avenue and Southwest 88th Street and slammed into a white Dodge pickup truck that was stopped at the traffic light, Det. Argemis Colome said.
The driver of the Honda then sped away, heading east on Southwest 88th Street before losing control and crashing into a tree in the area of Southwest 168th Avenue and Southwest 88th Street.
Both the driver and passenger of the Honda — whom police did not immediately identify — died at the scene. The pickup truck driver was not injured.
