Student finds loaded gun inside school bathroom in Kendall, reports say

A fifth-grade student found a loaded gun inside a school bathroom Friday in Kendall, reports say.

School officials at Somerset Academy Bay School say a security guard left the gun in the restroom. When the student went to use the bathroom, he or she found it and went straight to the office to tell administrators, reported NBC6.

The school principal, Saili Hernandez, told WSVN that the security guard’s contract was terminated. The guard was not identified.

“The weapon was immediately removed. No child or faculty member was injured,” Hernandez wrote in a statement to parents, Local10 reported. “The security guard was immediately asked to leave and will not be returning to our school. As both a principal and a parent of students at this school, ensuring the safety and well-being of students here is my number one priority.”

Somerset Academy Bay School is located at 9500 Southwest 97th Avenue, just southwest of Dadeland Mall.
