An argument escalated into a stabbing at a Homestead home Wednesday afternoon when a woman tried to kill her daughter in view of one of her grandchildren, authorities say.

Around 3:40 p.m., Homestead police officers were called to a stabbing at a home in the 700 block of Southwest Fourth Avenue, an arrest report read. When an officer knocked on the door, 57-year-old Celestine Ward answered.

Just past her, the officer could see a woman sitting in a pool of blood on the living room floor, leaning against a cot bed. She was airlifted to Jackson South Medical Center in critical condition.

Detectives interviewed a child at the home who said her mother and father had been arguing before the stabbing. Her dad left, and then her mom and grandmother, Ward, started to argue, the report read.

That’s when “Grandma started to kill Mami [mom] with the knife, the knife is in the room under the bed,” the child told the detective.

Authorities were able to speak to the injured mother, who was not identified, at the hospital, who said she was drinking earlier in the day with Ward at a Chili’s Grill and Bar, the report read.

Later on, when the argument began, the mother could not recall what the fight was about, but did remember Ward charging toward her twice — the second time with a knife and stabbing her multiple times.

According to authorities, Ward told them the fight and stabbing were self-defense, claiming the mother attacked and punched her several times in the face.

Officers did not see any visible injuries on Ward, the report read.

Ward was charged with attempted felony murder and taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where she remained as of Thursday evening.
