Man arrested after Florida Turnpike shooting. He’s facing attempted murder charges
Miami-Dade County police arrested a man Tuesday who they say shot and seriously wounded another on Florida’s Turnpike the night before.
The shooting happened shortly before midnight in the northbound lanes of the highway right before the exit 9 off-ramp in Homestead, said Detective Angel Rodriguez, a Miami-Dade County police spokesman.
Officers arrested 26-year-old Braian Gimenez Tuesday morning as he got into his Mercedes Benz in the parking lot at the 14000 block of SW 284th Street in Homestead.
He was booked into Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Facility on two counts of attempted premeditated murder, firing a gun from a car, use of a firearm while committing a felony and possession of a firearm while having a domestic violence injunction against him.
Gimenez was carrying a .45 caliber handgun in the waistband of his pants, police said. Bond had not been set as of Wednesday, and information about his legal representation was not immediately available.
The victim, who police have not named, was driving a woman to her house, according to his arrest report. She noticed Gimenez’s car parked and running, and told the victim to drive away quickly.
He obliged, with Gimenez in pursuit, police say. Gimenez continued to aggressively approach their car as both vehicles entered the Turnpike, according to the report.
Traveling in the northbound lanes of the highway, Gimenez pulled alongside the victim’s car. He then opened fire, striking the car several times, before hitting the man in the head, the report states. The victim lost control of the car, which came to a final stop on the side of the Turnpike.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue took the victim to Jackson South Medical Center’s trauma center in critical condition, Rodriguez said. His condition was not available as of Wednesday, Rodriguez added. The woman was not injured.
Per the report, Gimenez fired at least seven shots, based on shell casings police found and reports from an electronic gunshot detector installed on the Turnpike.
