A 12-year-old flown to a hospital Sunday after accidentally shooting himself in the head at a home in Homestead is expected to recover, police said.

The shooting occurred at a house in the 1800 block of Southeast 13th Street, Homestead police Captain Fernando Morales told the Miami Herald in an email Sunday evening. The boy, whose name hasn’t been released, was taken to Kendall Regional Trauma Center where he’s in stable condition.

“At this time, there are no pending charges for anyone involved in this incident,” Morales said Monday. “Detectives will continue to investigate the circumstances...”

The shooting, Morales said, happened earlier in the day and the exact time is unclear.

A preliminary investigation revealed the boy had a firearm in his possession when the child mistakenly shot himself at some point, police said. How the boy got hold of the gun wasn’t released.

No further details were available.
