Hialeah police officers on Monday shot and killed an armed man in the parking lot of a popular shopping center.

The man, whose identity was not revealed, had been reported to the 911 emergency services as exhibiting suspicious behavior just before 1 p.m. in the Westland Commons parking lot at West 49th Street and 16th Avenue, Hialeah spokesman Carl Zogby said.

“We were informed that the individual was armed [...] and soon officers arrived at the scene,” Zogby said. “After an exchange of words between the Hialeah officers and the man who was alone, armed and standing by a green Camaro, the police officers shot and killed him.”

Zogby said the case is under investigation. After the shooting, the shopping center was cordoned off for several hours. Customers in the area said they heard at least 20 shots.

“Though any death is a tragedy, we are very pleased with the officers’ immediate response,” Zogby said. “They came and stopped a threat with no one else getting hurt.”
