A woman was hospitalized with severe injuries after a dog attacked her at a Hialeah house Thursday night, and the owner of the dogs, who’s the woman’s son, was arrested, police say.

Police and Hialeah Fire Rescue paramedics arrived at the house on the 1100 block of West 70th Place and found 58-year-old Ana Leyva with bite marks on her arms and legs, Officer Scarlett Hernandez, a department spokeswoman, said.

Paramedics flew Leyva to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. Leyva’s condition was not immediately available.

Officers located the dog that attacked Leyva and also found several other dogs that were on the property and were in poor condition and had signs of undernourishment, Hernandez said, adding they were living in unsanitary conditions and lacked clean water.

Officers arrested 22-year-old Jairon Alvarez, who police say is Leyva’s son, on charges of animal cruelty and resisting arrest without violence, Hernandez said. Alvarez did not show up in Miami-Dade County jail records on Friday. Information about his legal representation was not immediately available.

Gabriella Dominguez, spokeswoman for Miami-Dade Animal Services, said 10 dogs were removed from the home by animal-control officers. Dominguez said the dogs “appear to be small English and French bulldog mixes.”

It’s not yet known what will happen to the dog that bit Leyva because the case is still under investigation, Dominguez said..
