A Hialeah police officer was killed in a traffic crash Thursday afternoon in Homestead, the department announced.

Officer Anthony Caabeiro died after he was taken to Baptist Health Homestead Hospital, said Homestead Police Department spokesman Detective Eric Rodriguez.

The Hialeah Police Department announced his death in an Instagram post Thursday night.

“At this time, we ask that you keep Officer Caabeiro’s family, friends, and his Hialeah Police Brothers and Sisters in your thoughts and prayers,” the post reads.

Rodriguez said Caabeiro was off-duty riding his motorcycle at Southeast 8th Street and 33rd Avenue shortly before 5 p.m. when he crashed with a car.

The car’s driver stayed at the scene, Rodriguez said.

“This is still an ongoing investigation,” Rodriguez said.

“Though his time with us was short, Officer Caabeiro made an enormous impact of his brothers and sisters in blue, as well as, his community,” Hialeah Police Chief George Fuente said in a statement. “He was remarkable young man that made us feel extremely proud and lucky that he was part of our family.”

“His shining personality will live in our hearts forever,” Fuente said.

Caabeiro is survived by his parents and his sister, Rodriguez said.
