Facing coronavirus crisis, Hialeah Gardens grants 50% discount on the water bill

Hialeah Gardens Mayor Yioset de la Cruz announced Monday that the municipality will grant a 50% discount on water bills during the month of April as a necessary measure “to somewhat alleviate” the household economy of that city due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

De la Cruz estimated that the discount amounts to about $300,000, which he said would directly benefit “the pocket of the residents.” Hialeah Gardens is home to about 25,000 people.

“It is a way to help our community, especially older people who have been very affected by the cut in their income,” De la Cruz told el Nuevo Herald on Monday.

The mayor also indicated that the city would wave occupational license fees due in April and May for small businesses.

“We seek to collaborate with our community at such difficult times,” De la Cruz said.
