A 29-year-old construction worker was killed Wednesday when a piece of heavy machinery being hoisted by a crane fell and hit him as he stood on the 37th floor of an Edgewater condo building, according to Miami Fire Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll.
The man, who has not been identified, was working on Biscayne Beach Condos, 711 NE 29th St., when piece of equipment — which Carroll said weighed more than 2,000 pounds — fell at about 4 p.m.
When rescue workers arrived, the man was dead, Carroll said.
Getting the man down from the building, which will be 54 stories when complete, posed a challenge because the elevator stopped at the 31st floor.

Carroll said crews used a crane — one not involved in the accident — to get him down.
Miami police are investigating.
