Another Miami-Dade facility fire sends up black smoke and closes a street at rush hour

A second fire in two months at a Miami-Dade County-owned waste facility didn’t burn nearly as long as the first, but sent up heavy black smoke and closed a road in Doral during Thursday morning’s rush hour.

The city of Doral said westbound Northwest 58th Street is closed after 87th Avenue as Miami-Dade Fire Rescue finishes dealing with a fire at 8831 NW 58th St.. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s call list said 23 units were sent to the Miami-Dade Solid Waste recycling center.

MDFR said the fire “involved a pile of rubbish” outside the worksite and “heavy equipment was used to break apart the rubbish in order to extinguish the fire.”

The call list said the fire started just after 7 a.m. and was under control by 8:15 a.m.

That’s a small fraction of the week that February’s fire burned at the Miami-Dade-owned, privately run incinerator at 6990 NW 97th Ave. in Doral.
