UM student from Denmark dies on Gables campus

University of Miami President Donna Shalala sent out an email Thursday night saying an international exchange student from Denmark died Wednesday evening at the Coral Gables campus.

Frederik Westerberg, a University of Copenhagen exchange student, was studying molecular biology and had been enrolled at the university for only one semester. He lived in Pearson Residential College at 5185 Ponce de Leon Blvd. in Coral Gables.

Social media reports indicate he may have jumped from a dorm room; Miami-Dade police are investigating. The university held graduation exercises on Thursday for the fall semester; student housing closed at noon Thursday for the winter break.

The counseling center and chaplains are available to students, Shalala noted.

“Our deepest sympathies are with his family and friends,’’ Shalala wrote.
