Coral Gables police said the Cox Science Building at University of Miami was evacutated Tuesday, April 15, 2025, due to a gas or chemical odor.

The University of Miami closed one of its science buildings after people noticed a strange odor in the air Tuesday afternoon, according to police.

Coral Gables police said there was a “gas/chemical odor” in the Cox Science building, prompting it to be evacuated and a perimeter to be set up to keep people away from the Memorial Drive property.

Detective Michelle Christensen, a police spokeswoman, said there were no injuries associated with the incident.

Around 5:30 p.m., the university said in a message to students on Facebook the building would be closed for the rest of the day while the source of the odor is investigated.
