A boat sank in Biscayne Bay Friday morning leaving people struggling in the water, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

Around 10:30 a.m., Miami-Dade Fire Rescue was called regarding two people in the bay who swam ashore near Matheson Hammock Marina, said fire-rescue spokesperson Andrea Rudchenco.

The pair were the only ones aboard the vessel and were left “critically injured” after the boating incident, Coral Gables Fire Rescue Lt. Ishmael Roig said. They were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center.

Only one boat was involved, but it isn’t immediately clear what led to the two people being injured.

Local 10 News reported the vessel was a catamaran racing boat that sank about a mile east of Matheson Hammock Park.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is the lead agency investigating the incident, and a spokeswoman with the agency said information was not immediately available.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
