‘You’re a Karen!’ Watch a fight over social distancing at a South Florida Whole Foods
An awkward situation played out at the Whole Foods in Coral Gables Thursday afternoon.
In the checkout line, one woman apparently got her cart too close to another shopper’s and words were exchanged.
In video shot by an onlooker and provided to the Miami Herald, a woman off-camera complains that the other shopper is too close to her in line in the crowded store.
“There’s supposed to be 6 feet of distance and I asked you nicely to kind of move aside,” the first woman gripes.
“You’re taking the whole aisle,” answers woman No. 2, wearing a black mask and jean jacket. “You’re taking the whole aisle.”
“No, you should have respected my space,” says the first woman.
“I don’t need to respect you,” scoffs the other shopper, waving her hand into thin air.
“Are you a Karen? Have you heard of Karen?” asks the first woman, referring to the pejorative nickname often given to busybodies who end up on social media.
“You’re a Karen!” the other woman shoots back.
“Oh my God!” says the original woman. “Ha-ha-ha, you’re such a Karen!”
The video ends with the second woman moving her cart away, which seems to defuse the situation from escalating.
A witness told the Miami Herald that the woman who complained about the other shopper getting too close had a service dog that was lying on the floor in the checkout.
A representative for the Austin-based supermarket chain did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
A staffer who answered the phone at the Whole Foods on Red Road said that the store adheres to all CDC guidelines recommended in the coronavirus pandemic. This includes wearing face coverings and following clear markings on the floor where individuals are to stand and walk in order to prevent the spread of highly contagious germs.
