A man is facing charges including first degree murder after police say he stole a Coral Gables hotel van and then ran over an employee who tried to stop him.

Edward Reid, 40, was being held Sunday in Miami-Dade’s Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center with no bond. He also faces charges of leaving the scene of an accident and kidnapping, though the details surrounding the kidnapping charges were not available Sunday.

The incident happened Saturday afternoon at the Courtyard by Marriott, 2051 Le Jeune Road.

According to police, an unidentified man got into the hotel’s van and took off. The victim, who police have not identified, ran into the driver’s path to try and stop him and was hit.

The victim was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital where he died.

Miami Herald news partner CBS4 identified the employee as 62-year-old Eladio Rodriguez.

Miami-Dade spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta said Reid was later taken into custody by Miami police.
