Sunny Isles Beach will hold yet another special election, this time in January to fill two vacant commission seats left open by commissioners who recently ran for mayor. The deadline to make the ballot was Friday afternoon.

Dana Goldman and Larisa “Laura” Svechin competed this month in a special election to serve out the rest of George “Bud” Scholl’s term as mayor following his August resignation. Their race, which Goldman won by a razor-thin margin, left two commission seats vacant.

The next special election is set for Tuesday, Jan. 25, when voters will elect new commissioners to represent Seat 1, encompassing the city’s northern area, and Seat 3, which covers the south.

As of Friday morning, prospective candidates who had submitted qualifying paperwork were:

  • Jerry Joseph, who recently ran for mayor but did not make it to the runoff election. Joseph is an entrepreneur who forms business entities for law firms and Certified Public Accountants, according to his mayoral campaign website.

  • Arie Steiger, president of the Steiger Group construction firm.
  • Fabiola Stuyvesant, who ran for the commission in 2020 and lost to Goldman, whom she supported for mayor.
  • Steve Trattner, who owns The Trattner Group.
  • Greg Capra, who ran for office in 2016 and 2020 and is the president of the Poinciana Island Yacht & Racquet Club. He is a fierce critic of Goldman, who happens to be his neighbor.

Attempts to reach the city clerk’s office after the 4 p.m. qualifying deadline to determine if anyone else submitted qualifying paperwork were unsuccessful.
