Bicyclist killed in hit and run, on way home from visiting girlfriend

Gary King had spent the evening with his girlfriend and was riding his bike home to Richmond Heights before dawn Wednesday, when he was struck by a motorist and killed, a family member said.

By late morning Monday Miami-Dade police had confirmed that a man was killed and that the driver didn’t stop or call police, but wouldn’t confirm that King, 54, was the victim.

“It’s safe to say it’s a hit and run,” said Miami-Dade police Detective Marjorie Eloi.

John King, Gary King’s first cousin, was one of the first people on the scene. He said his cousin had just left a visit with his girlfriend in West Perrine and was driving north on Southwest 102nd Avenue at 171st Street, when he was struck. He believes the crash happened at about 3 a.m.

“There were no skid marks or nothing,” John King said. “The driver didn’t stop.”
